C/O 88 sts using long tail method. Being careful not to twist your stitches, join work. Work in K2,P2 ribbing for 1 1/4 inches. Knit in stockinette stitch for 1 inch. Work desired fair Isle pattern for 3 1/2 inches.
You can of course work a stripe pattern instead of Fair Isle. I have incorporated both stripes and fair isle in this hat's motif.
Reality Check> You should have 5 3/4 total inches knitted before you begin crown shaping.

Dec Row1 *K9, SSK; repeat * to end. (80sts)
Dec Row2 K
Dec Row3 *K8, SSK; repeat * to end. (72sts)
Dec Row4 *K7, SSK; repeat * to end. (64sts)
Dec Row5 K
Dec Row6 *K6, SSK; repeat * to end. (56sts)
Dec Row7 K
Dec Row8 *K5, SSK; repeat * to end. (48sts)
Dec Row9 K
Dec Row10 *K4, SSK; repeat * to end. (40sts)
Dec Row11 K
Dec Row12 *K3, SSK; repeat * to end. (32sts)
Dec Row13 K
Dec Row14 *K2, SSK; repeat * to end. (24sts)
Dec Row15 K
Dec Row16 *K1, SSK; repeat * to end. (16sts)
Dec Row17 SSK all remaining sts. (8sts)
Cut yarn with about 12" tail. thread through remaining 4sts, pull tight, weave in end.
