[edit] Introduction

Adding a lining to a felted bag is a great way to finish the project. It adds a very professional touch to your finished bag. All it requires is some basic sewing skills and a little patience.

[edit] Tools

  • Fabric for lining your bag
  • A large piece of paper for making template
  • Scissors
  • Straight Pins
  • Needle and Matching Thread
  • Sewing Machine
  • Iron

[edit] Make a Pattern

Make a Pattern
Step 1: Using a piece of paper than is larger than your finished purse, cut out the outline of the purse.

Notes:

  • You can cut the paper slightly larger than the purse to include the seam allowances in your pattern
  • A paper grocery bag is a good source of a large piece of paper.

Step 2: Fold the edges of the paper template back so that the paper pattern fits into the bag without ripples. Fold down the top of the paper so it is 1/4 below the top lip of the bag. This represents the finished dimensions of your lining.

Notes:

  • Trim off any excess paper leaving about a 1/4-1/2" of paper between the fold and the edge to represent the seam allowance.
Fold the pattern to fit into the bag

[edit] Sew the Lining

Sew the Lining
Step 1: Lay the fabric you've chosen for your lining out and fold it in half with right sides together. Press the fabric and fold. Find a paper grocery bag
Step 2: Lay your pattern on top the folded fabric with the edge that represents the bottom on the fold. Pin the pattern in place making sure that your folded edges are opened up and laying flat Fold the pattern to fit into the bag
Step 3: Cut out the fabric and pin fabric with right sides facing. With matching thread, use a sewing machine to sew the sides leaving a 1/4" to 1/2" seam allowance on both sides. Fold the pattern to fit into the bag
Step 4: Fold the side seams onto the body and press. Fold the top down so that it is approx. 1/4" below the top of the bag and press. Fold the pattern to fit into the bag
Step 5: Place the partial finished lining into the bag. Check that the side seams fit. Make adjustments to the seams as needed. Fold the pattern to fit into the bag

[edit] Finishing

[edit] Add a Closure

If you want to add a closure, such as a magnetic snap, it should be added before the lining is sewed into the bag.

[edit] Attach the Lining to the Bag

Place the lining into the bag and hand sew into place using a reverse slip stitch.
