Basic knitting needles are two straight sticks with stops on one end and points on the other. They come in a wide variety of sizes, lengths and materials.

[edit] Circular Knitting Needles
Circular knitting needles are used to knit in the round. They are similar to regular needles, but instead of having a stop on the ends, they are connected together by a cable. The needle portion is usually shorter than that of a regular straight needle. The cable material is most commonly plastic The connecting cables come in a variety of lengths. The length of cable you need will depend on the finished size of your project. You want them to be around the same size. Circular needles are well suited for larger projects knit either back and forth or in the round.

Double pointed needles are used for knitting in the round. They are a set of 4-5 short needles that have points on both ends. They are best suited for smaller projects.
